Coatbridge students are set to guide the way to a great future as they take over The Lighthouse for one of the biggest events in the Glasgow music industry calendar.

“Question Session”, an annual conference for those working in, or looking to get into, the industry, will take place on Saturday, February 8.

Organised by music business students at New College Lanarkshire’s Coatbridge campus, the conference offers a programme of events running from 9am to 5pm, including workshops, seminars, expert panels and live sessions.

Free to attend and open to the public, the conference aims to provide networking opportunities as well as knowledge sharing – offering a tailored programme of events to suit anyone with an interest in the industry.

More than 60 industry experts will lead the activities throughout the conference, including musicians, managers, PR agencies, venues, recording labels, production and promotion teams, music software and hardware companies and broadcasting professionals.

Working in partnership with Ableton, Become One Music, Guitar Guitar, Help Musicians UK, The Lighthouse, The Scottish Music Industry Association and SW+CO, “Question Session” launched in 2016 to educate people about the music industry.

It forms part of the music business course at the college, giving students access to some of the biggest names in the industry while providing insight into the various components that make up the business.

This year’s event will focus on the theme of innovation, education and current issues.

Music lecturer and musician Yvonne “Tippi” Tipping will form part of the panel offering advice on pathways to the music industry – showcasing the college’s range of courses and the doors they can open for students.

The event will also feature live sessions and performances showcasing emerging musical talent – including that of New College Lanarkshire students.

Gareth Whitehead, college lecturer, said: “Question

Session promotes inclusion and has initiated change by ensuring that each conference line-up demonstrates a 50:50 gender balance.

“It also focuses on accessibility, making sure that everyone has a platform for discourse and an opportunity to learn. This year’s event will feature a plethora of professionals from different areas of the music industry offering advice on how to start or develop your career.

“There will also be technical and production workshops, as well as community-based music projects offering interactive sessions.

“This is an invaluable experience for students to be involved in as they have direct access to some of the biggest names in the industry and are learning all the areas they could potentially make a career in.

“The organisation of the event also helps them develop their skill set and get their name out there for the future.”
