Pirates in search for new players

Opportunity

Watched the Superbowl on Sunday night and think you could be the next Patrick Mahomes or Jimmy Garoppolo?

You don’t need to travel to the US to give it a go - the East Kilbride Pirates are looking for players from ages 13+ to boost their numbers for their youth, junior and senior teams ahead of the 2020 starting in April.

“We’re always looking to expand our squads,”explained club chair Amanda McDonald.

“No experience is needed, just a great attitude, a good level of fitness and enthusiasm.

“Every year we welcome players of all ages who’ve never tried the sport before, and teach them what they need to know to turn them into great players for the team.

So if the Super Bowl had you glued to your television, why not get up off the sofa and give it a go?”

Amanda added: “There’s a position on the field for everyone – regardless of size and shape.

“But in particular we’re hoping to attract people interested in lineman positions – the bigger, stronger, physical players vital for protecting the ball and controlling the line of scrimmage.”

New players get three free sessions to give the sport a go, and no equipment is needed try it out during this time.

Youth and junior players are also provided with kit on loan if they decide they want to continue and sign up to the team – thanks to equipment funded by the National Lottery Community Fund Scotland.

The Pirates youth team for players aged 13-16 practice on Sundays at Duncanrig Secondary School in East Kilbride, while the team’s junior squad for 16-19 year olds, and senior team for players, aged 19 and over, practice at Hamilton Palace Sports Ground.

It’s not long until the season gets underway in Britain, with the Pirates set to kick-off their 2020 campaign in April.
