Mall walkers are stepping out again

-

A project to help get the over-50s moving will get back in its stride.

The Seniors Together project is re-starting its monthly meet-up for East Kilbride’s mall walkers.

Following a couple of successful trial events at the end of last year, the team was delighted to discover that so many locals have taken up the initiative since its launch in 2018.

To build on that popularity and widen awareness, regular‘mall walking meet up and coffee’sessions have been scheduled on the first Wednesday of each month throughout 2020 in the town’s Central Library.

Running from 10am till noon, each session will offer the chance to meet up with the Seniors Together project team, and of course, fellow mall walkers, over a cuppa.

Launched in November 2018, the mall walking initiative aims to making fitness more accessible and sociable for over-50s.

Originating in the USA, the project is being led locally by Seniors Together, South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture (SLLC) and EK, East Kilbride shopping and leisure centre.

Chair of Seniors Together, Helen Biggins, said:“We were delighted to meet so many mall walkers at our recent events, and even happier to know that the project has struck a chord with our older population, who stop in, pick up their specially designed route maps and head off.

“Studies in North America have shown that shopping centres are the second most popular walking option for older people, providing an easy and safe way to incorporate fitness into lifestyles, often without even realising.

“We hope that through our meet and greet sessions, many more will be keen to join us in this novel way of staying fit over 50.”
