Battling with Ciara

-

FRASER WILSON

Residents in East Kilbride battled through some challenging conditions earlier this week as Storm Ciara continued to cause problems.

Monday and Tuesday saw heavy snow and sleet fall as the area was issued with a yellow weather warning.

Locals in East Kilbride and nearby East Renfrewshire woke up to snow and hailstones on Monday morning.

That was expected to last until Wednesday this week, with generally poor conditions expected to continue until the weekend.

The warning was put in place after a weekend of turmoil and disruption caused by Storm Ciara, which saw a number of incidents in the area.

That included a lampost crashing down into a garden in Melbourne Avenue and a number of accidents reported at the Whirlies Roundabout.

There was fun to be had with kids on school holiday hoping to be able to sledge and play in the wintry conditions.

And there was some shock as well, with contract workers taking to flat roofs to carry out work.

In a video sent into the EK News by reader Karen Murray, two people are seen working away on top of a roof, despite the havey windfall and blustery winds.

Karen said: “I saw them from the kitchen window.

“As far as I know, they were working their way along Telford Road, including Denholm Crescent, replacing the panelling from under the widows to remove asbestos and replacing the roofs at the same time.

“I feel for the poor boys having to go up there in this weather, scaffolding or not, it cannot be safe.”

South Lanarkshire Council failed to get back to the News before going to print as to whether these were contractors for them.

Weather experts say a 60 per cent risk of sleet and snow remains throughout Wednesday, with temperatures at just one degree.

And that comes with a ‘feels like factor’ of MINUS FOUR because of the heavy winds and wintry conditions.

Wind gusts could be as high as 31mph, with an average of gusts in the high twenties.

Driving conditions are expected to remain difficult, with Police Scotland and Traffic Scotland urging motorists to take care on the roads when driving, and to make sure their cars are fit for all conditions.

Anyone looking to travel is urged to check road conditions first. Travel updates can be seen at trafficscotland. org, scotrail.co.uk, firstgroup.com and stagecoachbus.com.
