A police officer suffered a fractured cheekbone during a skirmish outside an East Kilbride homeless unit.

Steven Allan, 20, admitted threatening or abusive behaviour at Lindsay House, in a police vehicle and at Cathcart police station.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard he was already on bail when the trouble happened on February 2 last year.

Jennifer Guy, prosecuting, said homeless unit staff were checking that no visitors had stayed beyond the 10pm curfew.

Allan, of Randolph Drive, Clarkston, was found in a resident’s room and told to leave.

He had been drinking and soon became argumentative, struggling with police officers when they arrived.

Ms Guy told the court: “Both he and one officer fell to the ground and the officer took the full force of this on his face.

“It became apparent he had a serious injury as the area around his eye was swollen.

“In fact, his cheekbone was broken, but he has made a full recovery.”

Allan became “increasingly aggressive” in the police car, swearing and demanding to be taken home. The fiscal added: “He had to be restrained continually during the journey and he continued to behave aggressively on arrival at the police station.” Defence agent Christopher Rae said Allan has a drink problem, but attends counselling.

The solicitor added: “Thankfully, he is now getting the support he needs”.

Sheriff Linda Nicolson deferred sentence until February 26 for a criminal justice social work report and continued bail.

She warned the accused: “This is a very serious matter and custody has to be considered.”
