Repairs will see road closures in village

-

Long-overdue repairs are set to be carried out on roads and pavements in Eaglesham.

But the welcome news comes with another headache, with roads being closed to allow for the work.

We told you last year how East Renfrewshire Council had set aside £175,000 to repair the condition of roads and paths on Park Crescent and Manseview Terrace.

That was to follow temporary patchwork repairs to allow for a safe parade route for the village Fair in June.

Now a temporary traffic regulation order has been put in place for March 2-20 to allow for the permanent repairs.

It is expected the work will be carried out between 9am and 4pm each day, with some vehicle access possible, but at the discretion of the contractor. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

Responding to the announcement from Councillor Jim McLean online, one Facebook user welcomed the work, saying: “Fabulous, at last.”

Another user posted: “A long time coming – will be great and much safer for all when done.”

Meanwhile, residents in the Gilmour Street and Strathaven Road area are experiencing disruption and congestion because of work on the village’s new nursery.

At the end of January, nursery contractors, Heron Bros, took ownership of the staff car park at Eaglesham Primary, meaning alternatives had to be found for staff parking, pupil pick-ups and drop-offs.

A letter was circulated by head teacher, Keira Finlayson, on January 17, advising of the arrangements in place.

Morning bus drop-offs are to take place at the bus stop on Gilmour Street, on the GP surgery side of the street, with the 3pm bus pick-ups taking place at the stop on the opposite side of the street.

The school playground will be used for taxi and minibus travel, with parents asked to consider walking to school rather than the school run to help with traffic congestion.

Evidence of increased road use and parking can be seen during the day at the school, with both sides of Strathaven Road lined with cars.

The measures are in place until the nursery build is completed in July 2020, however, the authorities are said to be “reviewing them continuously” during the build period.
