Double yellows instead of parking permits

-

New Traffic Regulation Orders are set to replace previously proposed parking permit zones in Hairmyres.

Council officers confirmed they were looking at different solutions for parking problems in the areas despite considerable public support for the proposed Residents’ Parking Permit Zone (RPPZ).

The new TROs could include yellow lines and waiting time restrictions in “known problem areas”.

Gordon Mackay, head of road and transportation, told South Lanarkshire Council’s community and enterprise resources committee that residents and road users were in favour of an RPPZ in Hairmyres.

Almost three-quarters of people supported the Hairmyres scheme following a consultation last year.

The Hairmyres consultation received the most response however, Mr Mackay said “the need to provide a park and ride was evident in responses”.

East Kilbride West councillor Monique McAdams asked if an RPPZ would be considered after the park and ride at Hairmyres was sorted out but Mr Mackay said the council were no longer proposing an RPPZ but “localised restrictions” instead.

East Kilbride West Cllr David Watson was disappointed with the report as there had previously been “some medium to long term hope” for residents in the affected areas.

He added: “This has been going on for years. I am not seeing anything in this report that brings this to a conclusion.”

Hamilton West and Earnock councillor Mark McGeever accepted that there were “no easy answers” but hoped concerns that new yellow lines could “prevent” shoppers as well as commuters would be taken forward.

Mr Mackay said:“The locations that we would target are problematic, areas where people can’t park easily or safely.”
