East Kilbride set for cycle lanes

-

New cycle lanes are to be built in East Kilbride following the conclusion of the Active Travel Study consultation.

A route linking towards East Kilbride Railway Station and the town centre was identified as being a priority following engagement with the public last year. The West Mains Road corridor will see the construction of a segregated cycle lane.

This will be constructed on the south side of West Mains Road from Strathfillan Road towards the railway station for a distance of approximately 500m.

The route has been designed to incorporate a 3.5m wide fully segregated cycle lane which will accommodate cyclists travelling in both directions.

There will also be junction alterations at Strathfillan Road, conversion of the pedestrian crossing to facilitate both pedestrians and cyclists, as well as footway resurfacing.

Funding from Scottish Government’s Cycling Walking and Safer Streets and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport will be used to construct the route.

Work will begin on Monday, 2 March and is expected to last for up to six weeks.

Chairman of South Lanarkshire Council’s community and enterprise resources committee, Councillor John Anderson, said:“Although the majority of the works will be in the verge of West Mains Road, there will generally be traffic management in place to ensure the works can be undertaken safely.

“We will of course make every effort to accommodate all road users, but some disruption is inevitable and we would be grateful for the cooperation of anyone affected during these times.

“We would request that all road users allow additional time for all journeys and that they plan their routes accordingly.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that may occur.”

Full details of the survey and the East Kilbride Active Travel Network Plan are now available online as the council aims to try and make walking and cycling to be the natural choice for people to make for their local journeys.
