Only key stores will remain open in EK

-

East Kilbride town centre’s flagship store has decided to shut amid the coronavirus crisis.

Department store Debenhams, in Centre West, closed its doors on Monday before the lockdown was enforced.

It followed the cinema chain Odeon who closed screens nationwide until further notice, affecting the Luxe cinema in The Hub.

Shoe retailer Clarks also took the decision to close, with River Island closing nationally also.

Disney, who have a pop-up store in Centre West, have also closed stores across Europe while TK Maxx, who have a store in Kingsgate shut across the UK too.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made it clear in a speech on Monday that all shops selling non-essential items, such as food or medicine, should close.

A Debenhams spokesman said: “We have taken the tough decision to temporarily close our UK and Republic of Ireland stores for trading.

“Throughout these very difficult times, the safety and wellbeing of our colleagues and customers has been of paramount importance.

“Our store colleagues have continued to demonstrate the highest professionalism and commitment and we will be working with them to support them through this process.

“We hope to be able to reopen as soon as is practically and safely possible. In the meantime, our UK and ROI customers will continue to be able to shop with us online.

A spokesman for EK, East Kilbride said:“The centre remains open to serve the local community and to ensure our stores can continue to trade.

“Some businesses in the centre have taken the decision to alter their trading hours and, as this is such a changeable situation, we recommend customers check with individual stores regarding opening times by contacting them directly or by visiting their websites or social media pages.

“We continue to monitor government and NHS advice and have implemented additional measures to our already comprehensive cleaning regime.

“We ask all customers to please follow the NHS advice and ensure you are aware of the latest guidance on COVID-19.”
