Charging into the future

An East Kilbride firm that’s making a powerful case for electric vehicles

- NICOLA FINDLAY

An East Kilbride firm which installs charging points for electric vehicles is leading the way in the green revolution.

Bumblebee is the brainchild of Scott Deacon who was born and bred in the town, and attended Hunter High.

After a number of years in the manufacturing industry, the 38-yearold was made redundant and decided it was time to change direction.

The self-confessed petrolhead developed an interest in renewable energy through his previous work as a compliance manager, which saw him oversee environmental issues among others.

And after months of work behind the scenes to gain the relevant certification from regulatory bodies, government agencies and charging point manufacturers, the company was born.

And it may only have been trading for just nine months, but Bumblebee gone from strength-to- strength, now operating as a team of 10.

The company install charging points everywhere, from people’s homes to hotels, car parks and large offices.

Scott has even brought in an exmarine in commercial director Brian Coyle to make sure everything is shipshape.

He also believes the sky’s the limit with rapid expansion in EVs and the charging points needed to power them.

“I have always been into my cars,” Scott told the News.

“After being made redundant I was disillusioned with the manufacturing industry in the UK and its decline in many ways.

“So, I was looking for what was up and coming and EVs just kept coming up - it was a no-brainer in many ways.”

Bumblebee, based at the technology park, installs both domestic and commercial charging points and also deals with securing grants from both the Scottish and UK Governments and provided finance for businesses after being approved by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Scott went on: “I am East Kilbride born and bred so I wanted to base the business here and the technology park is perfect.

“We have lots of companies in the same sector as us and also have a charging point manufacturer right next to us.

“We really want to spread the word about EVs and in all honesty the difference between them and petrol and diesel is night and day. I defy anyone to drive an EV and not be impressed.

“They are the future - and it won’t be long before that’s all we drive. They are zero-emission which is the most important thing to tackle climate change and the running costs compared to petrol and diesel are minimal.

“The biggest investor in EV charging points in this country is BP, which says it all - they know where things are going.”
