Group vowing to help needy

NICOLA FINDLAY

A community group based in East Kilbride is offering a lifeline to those who need it most as the country battles the coronavirus crisis.

Share Alike give out food and clothing at times of crisis in the community but the current COVID-19 situation has left stocks low.

They have set up a gofundme page to help them get what they need but are vowing to help the most vulnerable for as long as is necessary.

Now they are open every Tuesday and Friday to distribute free fresh food bags from their base at Strathmore House in the town centre.

Bags will be given out at appointments to those in need, with appointment times scattered to minimise contact.

Friday afternoons will see the charity distributing fresh bags to over-75s in the area and they are urging folk to get in touch if they know someone in this category.

However, they still need the community to rally round.

Annmarie Campbell from the charity said: “Our stock is usually mostly surplus food from surrounding retail partners and donations from the public.

“But we have been left with very little to help those without the means to buy basic food rations, let alone bulk buy.

“And in the current crisis, even more people are in need – particularly the over-70s who are isolating.

“We need your help to gather some essential supplies to continue to support the most vulnerable through this crisis.”

Face-to-face activities have stopped and Annmarie is reassuring people every precaution is being taken, with virtual classes being offered via their online wellness hub.

These are aimed at helping those isolated, including classes on meditation/relaxation, qigong, Tai Chi and beginners sign language.

The gofundme page is taking donations to ensure it has supplies and can be found by searching for Share Alike – Crisis support during Covid 19 in East Kilbride.
