Assessment hubs in place

-

NHS Lanarkshire has launched a number of assessment hubs for people who may need care for coronavirus.

The health board has now established a community telephone triage hub and two COVID-19 assessment centres in the area.

That’s as part of their‘robust’emergency response to the pandemic, with assessment available by prior appointment only.

The facilities will dovetail with the pre-existing out-of-hours service but, members of the public are urged to note that testing is not readily available.

Nurse director Maria Docherty said:“As the number of people with symptoms continues to grow, we are adapting quickly to manage demand.

“The establishment of these centres is part of emergency operational arrangements being undertaken in line with Scottish Government plans. “It is clear we face a challenge which we have not seen before in our lifetimes. Following the steps detailed is vitally important in helping us get the right help at the right time to people when they require it.

“It is crucial that members of the public note that assessment is by prior appointment only. Do not present at an assessment centre otherwise.”

Patients who think they may have the virus are asked to dial NHS 24 on 111if symptoms worsen or do not improve after seven days.

But, in order to get straightforward dedicated route to clinical advice and support Ms Docherty urged them not to call their GP practice or go to the surgery, instead call the 111 helpline where they will be assessed – if necessary, information will be forwarded to a local community hub.

Specialist clinicians there will call patients back, which will be triaged for further steps.

Ms Docherty added:“We understand this is a very anxious time, however, everyone has a duty to minimise the spread of the virus and keep our staff safe so they can continue to care for people.”

Depending on assessment, patients may be given advice to help them continue self-isolating or given an appointment to attend.
