An East Kilbride based energy company has provided face masks to one of the country’s largest care providers for use in their facilities.

Three of EDF’s sites in Scotland, which includes the base near Peel Park, have been involved in the project.

The donation of 3000 masks to CrossReach, which provides social care services on behalf of the Church of Scotland, will help to ensure their staff and residents are protected during the Covid-19 outbreak.

East Kilbride, Torness power station in East Lothian, Hunterston B power station in North Ayrshire have each given 1000 masks.

CrossReach has facilities across Scotland.

Rob Guyler, EDF’s Chief Financial Officer, said:“As part of the UK’s critical infrastructure we understand only too well the importance of keeping your workforce healthy at this time and for those working in frontline caring roles PPE is crucial.

“We want to be able to do our bit to support people in the community during these difficult times so we are happy to be able to make this donation.”

Elspeth McPheat, one of

CrossReach’s care home managers, said:“It is amazing how kind and thoughtful people are being.

“It means so much to know that as social care workers you are loved and cared for by others when you are loving and caring for those in your care.”

This is just one of the steps EDF is taking across the UK to support local communities during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Aldi workers in East Kilbride are to be issued face masks to increase their safety as they continue to help feed the nation.

The move is in addition to the previously announced provision of gloves and clear screens that are being installed at more than 7000 checkouts nationwide.

Staff can also now access the Government’s COVID-19 testing programme for critical workers.

The discount supermarket giant has also introduced a voucher scheme to make it easier for volunteers to buy food on behalf of the vulnerable and those self-isolating.

The vouchers are available to buy on a new Aldi voucher website vouchers.aldi.co.uk.

Once purchased, the vouchers can be posted to any address in the UK so they can be given to volunteers, friends or family members to shop on behalf of vulnerable people.

Vouchers are available in denominations of £5 and £10 with no additional costs to customers for postage.

Aldi is also buying additional volumes of British beef to support farmers faced with surplus product due to closures of restaurants and catering businesses.
