Tory MSP backs calls to protect local newspapers
A Tory MSP is backing calls from his party to protect local newspapers during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Scottish Conservatives tabled an amendment to bill in Holyrood seeking the increased assistance for the under-pressure industry which is backed by Central Scotland MSP Graham Simpson.
It was passed and will see newspaper publishers granted the same business rates ’holiday as has been given to enterprises in the leisure, retail and hospitality sectors.
The amendment was also supported by Labour, Green and Liberal Democrat MSPs. They pointed out, given the Scottish Government had earmarked journalism as a key industry, they deserved the same level of support as others.
The SNP, however, voted against the amendment. Some provisions have been made for increased advertising from the Scottish Government.
But given the local press has lost 75 per cent of advertising revenue and 25 per cent of circulation cash, it’s not enough to guarantee the sector’s future. The amendment was submitted to Stage
Three of the Coronavirus (Scotland) Bill. Graham Simpson said: “Local newspapers have been rightly recognised as a key industry. Now they need the Scottish Government support which comes with this status.
“It would be relatively straightforward for the SNP government to provide local newspapers with the same support the retail, hospitality and leisure industry receives.
“Scotland’s newspaper industry is vital to society and democracy at the best of times. But given the scale of the crisis we’re living through, we need trusted news sources more than ever. ”East Kilbride MSP Linda Fabiani said: “Local newspapers in particular provide a vital resource and it is important they are provided with the right support during this difficult period.
“That is why the Scottish Government initially pledged a package worth £440,000 for advertising in local papers, which was then increased by some £3 million.
“It was clear the Scottish Government’s priority was supporting local papers, many of which may not pay rates at all if they receive the Small Business Bonus.”
