EK tip opens back up after lockdown

Changes tohubs

-

Schooling arrangements for children of key workers are set to change from next week in South Lanarkshire.

The local authority said as they begin to plan for the phased return of staff and children back to school, they are working to ensure their buildings are ready for a return in August.

To enable the staff to come into school this month to help with these preparations, they say they will need to make a change to the current model of their emergency childcare hubs.

From Monday, June 8, children who currently have a place at the School Hubs will attend their own base school instead. These arrangements will run from Monday, June 8 until Friday, June 26.

From Monday, June 29, the School Hubs arrangement will come back into place and will run throughout the summer.

Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Education Resources Committee, Councillor Katy Loudon, said: “We will be in touch to let parents of children attending the hubs know of the new arrangements.”

Recycling centres across South Lanarkshire reopened this week for the first time in months.

Tips were closed at the start of the lockdown after travelling to a dump was not classed as an essential journey.

However councils across the region were granted permission to re-open on Monday with a raft of restrictions put in place.

Local authorities across Lanarkshire warned residents to only visit the recycling centres if really necessary as lengthy queues were to be expected.

Early morning queues were seen at East Kilbride’s recycling centre in the town’s Peel Park Place, but appeared to disperse as the day went on.

One resident said: “Cars had been queuing up early before opening this morning but the authority seem to have it well managed and under control. So it’s not been backing up too much.”

Residents now need proof of address to use recycling centres with restrictions including limits to the number of people on site and what waste and recyclables can be disposed of.

They are now only able to dispose general waste, cardboard and compostable garden waste as a number of restrictions will be imposed to ensure social distancing can be maintained.

No bulky items like furniture and white goods, electricals, building materials, wood or rubble will be accepted as restrictions on people moving around the site will be in place.

The council’s six recycling centres at Carluke, East Kilbride, Eastfield, Blantyre, Larkhall and Strathaven will be open from 9am to 7pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm on Saturdays and 9am to 5pm on Sundays.

SLC are asking that you only visit the site if you have no coronavirus symptoms and, once parked, only one person can exit each car to offload waste and they must stay within their own bay.

A cars-only policy will operate so no vans, trailers or trade waste will be allowed and a queueing system will be in place to limit the number of cars allowed inside at one time.

Each bay will have three skips, which initially will be available for black bag (general) waste, cardboard (but not paper) and compostable garden waste

SLC have said they have “prioritised these waste types to meet what we believe will be residents’ main needs at this time” but have promised to keep this under review.

There will be road diversions and traffic controls in place, and signage and staff will be present at the entry point and along the queue, to provide any advice and ensure that regulations are being followed to ensure everyone’s safety.
