South Lanarkshire Council are hoping to give every new primary one pupil the chance to visit their new school before the summer holidays.

Over the next couple of weeks, the council wants to organise dates for four-and five-year-olds due to start school in August to meet their new teacher.

Some schools have already contacted parents with details of visits next week.

According to Scottish Government advice on physical distancing, only one adult can accompany children visiting their new school.

However, it might not be possible for every school to facilitate visits for new P1s before the school term ends on Wednesday, June 24, so some schools have been taking steps to try and ensure a smooth transition.

Canberra Primary and Heathery Knowe Primary in East Kilbride have sent letters to the new P1s.

Tony McDaid, executive director of education at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “Last week, I wrote a personal letter to parents and families to let them know our plans for re-opening in August, including the possibility that a small number of pupils may be able to return in June for transition.

“As part of this, some staff have this week returned to their schools on a phased basis to help plan for a return of children in August.

“Our schools and nurseries are following the guidance from the Scottish Government and where appropriate, this may include small groups of identified learners attending on a limited basis.

“The input of our staff and parents is very important at this time and, this week, we are meeting with all parent council chairs, as well as asking our staff, families and young people what matters to them through surveys.

“Engagement and communication are vital in helping to provide reassurance and confidence that we are all working together to support a safe opening of our schools and nurseries.”
