Tips to keep on running in lockdown

-

One positive impact of lockdown has been the increase in the number of people taking up running.

With the public allowed just one form of daily exercise at the height of the lockdown in March and April, running has proved to be a popular way to keep fit for most.

But where have they all come from? Where will they go once lockdown ends? And, meantime, are there any training plans they can follow?

East Kilbride Athletic Club’s seniors’ distance running coach Jamie Clements has given his view and provided some top tips to maintain that new-found enthusiasm for running.

Jamie said: “Anecdotal evidence suggests a lot are first-timers, including parents who started running with their children, while some are doubtless substituting running for the gym and others are former runners who have got right back into it.

“Many will continue running once the pandemic eventually eases, and we’ll be ready for them.

“Our adult groups cater for most abilities – regular racers and new runners alike. So, whether you run 5km in fifteen minutes or thirty-five, you’ll be in good company once company becomes possible again.

“The pandemic means there are no races at present, but competition has adapted.

“Scottish Athletics and others are organising virtual races. Athletes run a set time or distance alone, observing social distancing rules, record the run on their watch or phone, then upload it to a leaderboard.

“It’s a great way to test yourself, or to dip your toe in the water if you’ve never raced before – no one is watching you!”

The good news, Jamie says, is the less fit you are, the quicker you will benefit from a low-stress programme.

New runners should consult qualified coaches and/or knowledgeable runners before investing too much in running shoes or other apparel.

Jamie Clements’ Lockdown Tips 1) Rest

It is a key part of your training and should not be confused with avoiding runs!

2) Be consistent

Complete your training and take your rest days and fitness will be just around the corner!

3) Be patient

Don’t expect results overnight. You should start to notice a difference after about four weeks.

4) Apply common sense

If you currently run 20 mins at most, don’t jump to 60 min. Build gradually. 5) Everyone can do this

Anything is better than nothing!
