Welcome surprise
Prestwick display
A few days ago I found out through Facebook that The Red Arrows were due to land at Prestwick Airport to re-fuel as part of their UK tour to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day.
I've always wanted to see them in action but have never been lucky enough. So, I looked into it and saw the social media account of Prestwick Airport insist there would be no display, just landing.
But I saw their flight path would take them directly over Strathaven; 'great' I thought. I'd at least see them without having to travel to Ayrshire just to see them land.
However, on the off chance they just might let off a bit of their famous red white and blue smoke before landing, I headed down the coast. I just didn't want to risk missing something happening.
I arrived at the airport 20 minutes before they were due in and picked my spot. And I am so glad I did. It turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. They were absolutely incredible.
Approaching in formation, releasing the smoke and even treating us to one of their spectacular manoeuver s. This may have been due to the Edinburgh display being cancelled – unfortunate for them, but it worked out well for me.
It wasn't anywhere near as busy as it was a couple of weeks ago for the huge Antonov An-225, but it was lovely to see children watching in awe as much as I was. For them it was inspirational, for me it was unforgettable.
