MSP Lennon launches petition to save bus
Lifeline X1 service was permanently scrapped

Central Scotland MSP Monica Lennon has launched a petition to have the First X1 reinstated.
The service is used by many in Strathaven but was permanently suspended after a campaign to save it just a few months ago brought a reprieve.
It came along with the announcement that the First 31 through Stewartfield was also being axed.
A petition to save it has secured over 2500 signatures.
Now the battle is on to save the X1 once again with nearly 1000 signatures so far.
On the change.org petition Labour’s Monica Lennon wrote: “This is not the first time the X1 has been threatened. The bus was successfully saved last year, following a petition by Hamilton resident Rebecca Creechan and campaigning by service users and local politicians.
!This was feared to be a temporary reprieve and our fears have been realised.
“During the COVID-19 crisis, the service was ‘temporarily withdrawn’ but it’s clear that First wanted rid of the X1 at the earliest opportunity.
“The X1 bus is a vital service for our local communities and is the only direct bus link to Glasgow.
For many workers, the X1 is an essential vital public transport link.”
Ms Lennon added: “MSPs, MPs and Councillors from various parties have challenged the decision but First are not for budging.
“Our community must not be silenced during the Coronavirus pandemic; we cannot accept profit being put before people at such a vulnerable time.”
Although the bus does not go through Strathaven itself - many from the town catch the bus in Hamilton.
Jenni Pirrett, who runs the Strathaven public transport Facebook page previously said residents were dismayed by the latest decison.
“I know lot people in Strathaven use the service for work, shopping or educational purposes,” she said.
“It’s ridiculous getting rid of it. I use it myself it’s a fantastic service and I am going to be lost without it.
“First said it’s never busy which is absolutely not true.
“We have had to fight to save this vital service before and we will do so again.”
