Covid forces race star to assess future

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Logan Hannah has been forced to take a step back in her Formula Ford career, after the coronavirus outbreak wrecked her season.

With the Scottish Championship scrapped that took away the 19-yearold’s major focus, but she also lost the majority of her sponsors.

Logan, who hails from The Village, admits she will need to think about where the next year or so will take her.

“It has wiped it out for us, almost,” she said.

“Most of my sponsors for the last few years have been friends of family and smaller businesses, so unfortunately due to what has happened, lots of them have had to pull out.

“From what we have left, we’ve just about got enough budget to do what is one round and two of the bigger rounds at the end of the year, and that’s what we’re targeting.

“Coronavirus hasn’t been good, personally. Due to losing sponsors and already struggling financially from the year before, it hasn’t worked out in our favour and that has changed our outlook and targets.

“We were targeting the Scottish Championships this year but that was cancelled, which completely stuck it on its head for us. We wanted to race down south, but we didn’t have the money.

“We really had to take a step back and work out what was best for me, and best for my family almost, money-wise.

“We’re planning on doing what is the last round of the National Championships, which is upwards of 20 drivers, and then it would be the Formula Ford Festival, with about 80 drivers, and the Walter Hayes Trophy, which last year had more than 120 drivers.

“I’ve done the Walter Hayes event twice and last year I finished 21st in the final out of 120, so not only top Scot, but top female. We want to better it each year and aim for a top-15 or something.

“That would make the end of the year, I think, and put us in a good spot for trying again in 2021. If they put the Scottish Championship on again we might do that, or we might just bite the bullet and do the full National FF1600 Championships – it depends on what sort of money we can get.”

Logan, who hopes to get a place on a psychology and sports studies course at the University of Stirling, has been around cars and racing for 10 years now, having been introduced by dad Graeme.

“He started racing when I was about nine, and eventually he let me out in a go-kart on my own

“I imagine from that moment he knew he was in for trouble!”
