- EMYLIE HOWIE

A fundraiser to help an East Kilbride family whose house was destroyed in a fire at the weekend has already raised more than £3000.

Emergency services battled a fierce house blaze at Wellesley Drive on Friday night, which has left the young family involved in it homeless.

Dramatic video footage and images show the severity of the fire as fire officers tried to get the blaze under control.

Smoke caused by the blaze could be seen billowing for miles into the clear evening sky, with a police helicopter also circling. Resident

Sharon Smith set up a GoFundMe page to raise £1000 and help the family and it already stands at more than treble that.

In her appeal, Sharon wrote: “Please, if you are able can you give as much as you can to help this heartbroken family to rebuild their lives?”

Fire crews battled a fierce blaze that tore through a house in East Kilbride on Friday night.

Emergency services raced to Wellesley Drive in Westwood, around 6.20pm after a blaze started in a garage.

Smoke could be seen billowing for miles into the clear evening sky, with a police helicopter also circling.

At least three fire engines and a number of police vehicles raced to the scene, cordoning off a number of streets to allow access.

Police managed traffic to allow for fire crews to stand on Mossneuk Road and tackle the blaze and the events attracted a crowd, with dozens watching aghast as the horrible events unfolded.

Videos and pictures show the ferocity of the fire, with smoke pouring from the windows and roof.

Reports on social media suggested no one was hurt, with one person – whose daughter appears to have been one of the first to call the fire service – saying on Facebook: “Everyone got out safe – so heart-breaking for the family.”

The Scottish and Fire Rescue Service confirmed there were no casualties and a spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6.01pm on Friday, April 23, to reports of a garage on fire at Wellesley Drive, East Kilbride.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the scene where a detached dwelling house was on fire.

“Firefighters extinguished the fire and left after ensuring the area was made safe. There were no reported casualties.”

A fundraiser for the family whose house was destroyed after the blaze has been set up by a kind-hearted member of the community.

In just two days, the gofundme page has raised over £3000.

Organiser of the page, Sharon Smith, thanked the community for their generosity on behalf of the devastated family, and posted: “To our neighbours and wider community.

“The family are delighted and overwhelmed with all the amazing support and messages of kindness since the events of last Friday evening. The kind donations are much appreciated and will help to rebuild a new future. xxx”
