Fly-tipping could have caused serious accident
Illegal fly-tipping could have caused a serious accident on a busy road in East Kilbride last week.
A section of Calderwood Road had to be closed after a large amount of waste was dumped, covering more than half the road for approximately 20 yards.
Construction debris and household waste were among the items dumped which had to be removed by council officers, at a cost of £1000.
And South Lanarkshire Council also say there has been a worrying increase in the fly-tipping of hazardous asbestos in recent weeks.
Their head of facilities, waste and grounds services, Alistair McKinnon, told the News:“These selfish actions could have had serious consequences to road users in the area.
“It is totally reckless, thoughtless and unfortunately we are seeing more and more examples of this type of behaviour across South Lanarkshire.
“Fly-tipping is illegal, unacceptable and costs time and money to clear up – but it is also an extremely dangerous crime.
“This latest incident is one of several our teams have had to deal with recently and our message couldn’t be any simpler – it needs to stop.”
He added:“Over the last few weeks there has also been multiple fly-tipping occurrences involving asbestos.
“Asbestos is very dangerous and has serious health issues when not handled and disposed of properly. If you spot any asbestos it is important not to disturb it so you avoid releasing the tiny fibres and report the fly-tipping immediately.”
