SupporttheBeatson

- JUDITH TONNER

Supporters of the Beatson Cancer Charity are being asked to take part in its ‘Turn It Yellow’ day next week in support of its latest fundraising campaign.

Fundraisers are asked to wear the bright colour, share their snaps on social media and donate towards its new ‘See The Difference’ initiative.

That aims to raise £100,000 towards the cost of a state-ofthe-art new MRI scanner for the West of Scotland cancer treatment centre in Glasgow.

Beatson Cancer Charity – which also funds support projects for patients at the Lanarkshire satellite centre, based at Monklands Hospital – is inviting participants to make donations by text or online throughout the special day this Thursday, April 29.

Costing £3.7m for its purchase, installation and operation for the first five years, the new scanner at the Glasgow centre will be the first of its kind in Scotland and is expected to be operational by October.

It is hoped it will help improve the outcomes of 20,000 people with cancer over the next 10 years.

Head of therapeutic radiography, Ethne McPherson, said: “This MRI scanner allows us to visualise and outline tumours at a whole new level – words cannot describe how valuable it is to future radiotherapy planning and treatment.”

“We’re really excited about this new scanner and to have fun getting the money together for it is great; each pound raised by people having a bit of fun does more good than you think.”

Supporters taking part in the colourful fundraising day on Thursday are asked to use social media hashtags #turnityellow and #seethedifference, and can email the charity on fundraising@beatsoncancercharity.org or call 0141 212 0505 to receive a fundraising pack.

Donations can be made online at www. beatsoncancercharity.org/mri/ or by texting 70450 to pledge £10.
