Jordan McGhee helped Dundee secure a play-off spot last week and nowhe’s hoping his old club Hearts candothem afavourtoboost theirpromotionhopes.
The defender, fromLindsayfield, guidedhis side to a 2-1 win over rivals Raith atthe weekend toensurethey go intonextmonth’s Premiership play-offs.
The win closed the gap on second place Raith to justa point with one gameremaining and thesidethat finishesChampionship runners-up will gointothe play-off semi-finals.
Thesides finishing in third and fourth must play-off to reach thesemis, so with champions Hearts nowhosting Raith onFriday, McGhee is hoping his formeremployers dothem a huge favourand Dundee take care of Queen of the South to wrap up a second-place finish.
McGhee said:“We knew once Hearts won the league, theonly thing in our minds became getting second place.
“We knewwe had to beat Raith, then win onFriday and see what happens elsewhere but we’ve given ourselvesthe best chanceofdoing that.
“It’s down to sto finish the job on Friday and see where it takes us.
“Hearts have had a bitof atough timeof it recentlyfrom their supporters [who have calleu d o n t h eclub not to lift the trophy inprotest at last year’s relegation] and on social media as well, so I think theywill wantto goout witha bang and finish off the season strongly. “I’m hoping that’sthe case anyway. “We can only concentrate on our game, whatever happens elsewhere will happen and all wecandois make sure wetake maximum points.
“It wouldbe massiveto finish second and a winwouldgive us momentum going intothe play-offs.
“This is notoriously thetoughest leagueto getoutof, there’s a lot ofgood teamsin it,big clubsand we just need to makesure we are at it to get promoted.”
Dundee have been absent from the topflightsince2019 and didn’t geta promotion shot last season due to the pandemic.
McGhee is desperate to help the Dark Blues back to wheret h e yf eelthey belong and insists theydon’t fear anyonein the play-offs, whichwill also includethe team that finishes second bottom of the Premiership, currently Ross County.
The24-year-old added:“If we play the waywe knowwecan, we’ll bea matchforanyonein the play-offs.
“It’d be massiveto get promoted. “Dundee is a club thatshouldbein the topflightand it’s been atough year for everyone. The fanscan’t getin to support us, so it wouldbeevenmore special ifwecanget up and their first game back couldbe at Densin a clash in the Premiership.”
