Beer of the Month

Lockett Bros, North Berwick

- By CHRIS LOCKETT

IT MAY be Easter week and therefore Holy Week in many people’s eyes, but to cycling nerds like me and most of the Belgian population, this is Holy Week for an altogether different reason.

Cycling is nearly as big in Belgium as football and this week there are four races that snake around the narrow lanes and cobbled climbs of the Flanders region of northern Belgium. Some of these famous gnarly rutted roads that they race over are even comparable to that of North Berwick High Street…

Three races lead up to the big one on Easter Sunday – the Tour of Flanders and this year will be the 108th edition, which makes it one of the oldest races in the world, and about three million people come out and line the course from Antwerp to Oudenaarde.

Most of these people will be drinking Kwaremont beer, a delicious Belgian Blond beer which takes its name from the most famous of the cobbled climbs on the route. I’ve been shipping this brilliant beer over from Belgium since my baptism at the 2016 edition of the great race.

Since then it has been one of my most popular beers and people have been piling in both online and in the shop to get their holy water in readiness for the big weekend.

So many people make their pilgrimage to North Berwick to get hold of this precious beer as it turns out I’m the sole stockist in the UK. I even have two kegs, so you can now enjoy Kwaremont on draft and even out of a Kwaremont glass – or holy grail, as I like refer to it.

Happy Easter, everyone.
