Have your say on the flood scheme

THIS week, I would like to discuss the Musselburgh Flood Protection Scheme, which I know is a highly emotive topic in Musselburgh and across the whole of East Lothian.

As an MSP, I do not have a role to play in the decision-making process; however, it is a topic which cannot be ignored.

Musselburgh is particularly at risk due to its location, being both on the Forth and the River Esk. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) have identified this as part of their flood risk mapping, on which further information can be found on their website.

We have all seen the devastation that can be caused be flooding, which is sadly becoming more prevalent due to the impacts of climate change. Naturally, we all want our homes, businesses and shared spaces to be protected from this, and to be safeguarded for future generations to enjoy. I am concerned about the risks faced by over 2,500 properties within my constituency, and of the potential devastation to the beautiful Honest Toun.

As part of the ongoing community engagement process, East Lothian Council recently delivered information to residents. It is important the whole community is kept informed, as the final scheme will affect everyone.

The environmental impact assessment has been published and is available to view online or at The Brunton, John Muir House in Haddington, and Dalkeith Library, along with the scheme documents. I would encourage you all to do your own research on what the proposals mean to you, and if you have any comments, to raise them directly with the scheme team.

Objections can be made to East Lothian Council on or before Wednesday, April 24. There are strict criteria for objections to be considered, which are detailed in the information letters sent out. This is also available online but, should anyone have missed it or be unable to access the internet, get in touch and I will endeavour to share the details with you.
