Music producer Bally Sagoo takes things to the Next Level with his comeback album

IN THE 1990s Bally Sagoo was the undisputed king of British Asian music and delivered iconic songs that are still massively popular today.

For his comeback album, the music producer has taken the winning formula that turned his tracks into monster hits and combined them with contemporary flavours. The result is a collection of diverse numbers with multi-generational appeal, which are powered by superb singers.

The mixed bag of catchy songs includes rap track Next Level, dynamite dance number Bhangra Jawan Ho Gaya, the retro-inspired Kinna Chauna, emotion-filled Tu Mainu Milja Ve and the explosive Sakhiyan Saheliyan. Then there are songs like the experimental Main Chali Pekeyan Nu, where Sagoo tries something a little different and it works.

That desire to do things in his own unique way is also apparent on Tenu Ki Hoya and Pyar Naiyon Mileya, where traditional vocals combine seamlessly with melodies you would find on a contemporary western dance number.

There are many stand-out moments on the album, including the song Yeh Rooh Bhi Tumhari Hai, which is a great modern-day version of his monster hit Dil Cheez, featuring the wonderful vocals of Sonu Kakkar.

Another outstanding vocalist featured on the album is Priti Menon, who shows off her impressive range on the instantly appealing Mera Mascara and the brilliant Tu Aaja Nachle. Like many of the tracks on Next Level, both numbers will instantly click with listeners.

There are some remixes on the album and also the reggae-inspired Tu Hi Tu, which are slow burners that take a few spins to sink in. In addition, there are special vinyl and CDs available for those wanting a collector’s edition.

Overall, this will be one of the best albums you will hear this year, and a sign that that Sagoo still has what it takes to deliver a hit record.
