Tamil gem shines a light on murky world of politics

-

THIS newly released Netflix Tamil film is another strong indicator that far more intelligent Indian cinema is being made away from Bollywood.

The comedy-satire set in a remote village centres around two warring half-brothers using caste divides, rivalry and bribery to get elected as the next leader, but not bothering too much about actual policy. With less than 700 votes up for grabs and potential riches available to the eventual victor, they try every possible trick to win. But when the results are a tie, someone dismissed as the village idiot has the casting vote and suddenly becomes the centre of attention.

The intelligent story may be set in a village, but it pretty much dissects the state of politics all over the world, where leaders use hatred, ahead of policies that will actually help people, to get elected. The subject being presented in a comedic setting makes viewers fully understand the absurdity of politics and rivalries that exist today.

The great setting and pitch-perfect performances elevate the wonderfully written material to a higher level. The not-so-heroic looking Yogi Babu is simply sublime in the lead role and represents the everyday man who just wants to have a better life. There are many funny moments from start to finish in this clever comedy rooted in reality.

The director skilfully brings out the best of what is there in the screenplay and the talented cast. The rural setting is captured really well with sharp camerawork in a fabulous film that punches way above its weight and offers up plenty of memorable moments.

Overall, this Tamil gem is one of the best Indian films that will likely be released this year and is why it deserves to be seen. It will also perhaps make people value their vote a little more.
