Yousaf hails Glasgow Pollok win

-

THE Scottish National Party (SNP) politician Humza Yousaf was last Friday (7) reelected as the Glasgow Pollok MSP beating his Labour rival by more than 7,100 votes, writes Catherine Hunter.

Yousaf, who has served as the cabinet secretary for justice since 2018, secured 18,163 votes, with his Labour opponent Dr Zubir Ahmed winning 11,058 of them.

With 54.3 per cent turnout in the constituency, the Tories, Greens, Lib Dems and UKIP won 1,849, 1,651, 522 and 185 votes respectively.

Yousaf said, “I want to pay my thanks to the people of Glasgow Pollok and say what an honour and privilege it is to be serving you once again.

“In 2016 I took great pride as the first ethnic minority SNP to be elected to this constituency seat, and now in 2021, I am the first ethnic minority SNP to be re-elected to this constituency seat.”

The MSP then addressed the Liberal Party anti-vax candidates who performed Nazi signals outside the Emirates Arena where the count was held.

“Today at this count we also had thugs who waved Nazi salutes to intimidate candidates, myself included,” he said.

“I have often been the victim of hatred and abuse over the years. Whenever I have had that hatred directed my way, the voices of good have outweighed the voices of bad.

“They came to target me, and I would like to pay thanks to not just my own team but also the Labour party, the Greens, Lib Dems and Conservatives who came in collectively and told them to jog on and they are not welcome here any time.” (Local Democracy Reporting Service)
