‘Precious niece taken too soon’

HUSBAND HELD AFTER WOMAN’S FATAL FALL IN SCOTLAND

-

TRIBUTES have been paid to a woman believed to be murdered at an Edinburgh landmark last week.

Fawziyah Javed, 31, from Pudsey in West Yorkshire, died last Thursday (2), after apparently plunging more than 800ft from Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, one of Scotland’s most famous tourist spots.

Police stated soon after the incident that they found the death “suspicious”, and arrested Javed’s husband, Kashif Anwar, in connection with the case.

Anwar, 27, and also from West Yorkshire, appeared for a short hearing in Edinburgh sheriff court on Monday (6) and entered no plea. He has been remanded in custody and is due to re-appear in court within the next week. The case will be continued for further examination.

Javed, a trainee solicitor, celebrated her wedding reception at Leeds recently before travelling to Scotland.

In a tribute posted on Facebook, her uncle Zareef Zaf Latif said: “Fawziyah, our precious niece, taken away from us way too soon. Have so many memories of you as a little girl. Will miss you so much. May Allah grant you a special place in Jannat. I hope the angels take care of you until we meet again.”

Lyons Davidson Solicitors, where she worked, described her as a “bright” professional who had made a “great impression”.

“Fawziyah Javed had a bright start to her legal career at Lyons Davidson Solicitors, working as a paralegal in employment, training with the business and then qualifying as an employment solicitor in March 2020”, the firm said.

“She made a great impression with both her colleagues and customers, winning Newcomer of the Year in 2016. In July of this year, she was again recognised for the support and assistance she gave other teams during the pandemic”.

Javed, who was believed to be in an early stage of pregnancy when she died, had been involved with charity work, media reports said.

Colleagues at a Yorkshire homelessness charity where Javed had volunteered since 2015 remembered her as a “genuine and very kind-hearted person”.

Osman Gondal, chief executive of the InTouch Foundation, said: “We have lost a community champion – somebody who had a passion and drive to help people that were in need.”

Gondal added: “You can have people who volunteer for, maybe, a day once a month. But whenever we needed her, she would always get involved.”

Talking about the case, Det Insp Bob Williamson said: “Fawziyah’s family ask for their privacy to be respected during this extremely difficult time.”
