Painfully long movie that is more annoying than funny
IN 2012, Ayushmann Khurrana became a movie star after making his big-screen debut in hit comedy Vicky Donor, which was set to the backdrop of sperm donation and fertility.
So, some bright spark thought why not put his younger brother Aparshakti Khurana in a film that primarily revolves around condoms. Unlike Vicky Donor, which was a smartly written screenplay offering audiences something new, Helmet has one joke about men being too embarrassed to buy condoms and stretches it into a painfully long film.
The film, which recently premiered on streaming site ZEE5 revolves around a group of friends who steal a huge stash of condoms by mistake and proceed to sell them on the black market to men too timid to buy them over the counter.
Although there are a few funny moments initially, the comedy quickly runs out of steam and becomes annoying. What remains is a bunch of notso-clever grown men acting like young hormonal teenagers. Instead of being a socially relevant comedy that has something clever to convey or one that is full of surprises, it becomes a cringe-worthy effort that is embarrassingly bad and proceeds to assault all the senses. It also looks like one big giant advert with the obvious product placements. Collectively, the characters are not particularly likeable and that also works against this movie. Not surprisingly, there is plenty of overacting from the entire cast.
Aparshakti Khurana, who has played some sterling supporting roles is wasted in the lead. It is difficult to see who this film will appeal to or why it was greenlit in the first place. It could easily have been a 10-minute short and would have been less painful to watch. That is why it should be avoided, no matter how bored you are feeling that day.
