Modi leads tributes to India’s green energy pioneer Tulsi Tanti
INDIA’S prime minister Narendra Modi led tributes to a leading businessman Tulsi Tanti following his death last weekend.
Tanti, the founder and chairman of Indian wind turbine maker Suzlon Energy Ltd, died last Saturday (1) aged 64, the company said in a statement. He suffered a cardiac arrest and
passed away the same day, the company added. He is survived by his wife Gita, son Pranav and daughter Nidhi.
Tanti was also the chairman of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association and the chairman of Belgium-based turbine parts maker ZF Wind Power Antwerpen since May 10, 2006.
Modi in a tweet said Tanti “was a pioneering business leader who contributed to India’s economic progress and strengthened our nation’s efforts to further sustainable development.”
Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said the businessman “spearheaded the wind revolution in India, he contributed immensely to the renewable energy sector & to India’s economic progress”.
Tanti established Suzlon in 1995 and led growth in the Indian wind energy sector by championing affordable and sustainable energy policies. The company has a market capitalisation of $1.1 billion (£960 million) with installed capacity of more than 19.4 GW across 17 countries.
In India, Suzlon is a market leader with over 100 wind farms and an installed capacity of over 13.45 GW. His vision led to Suzlon setting up R&D centres in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and India.
Vedanta’s Anil Agarwal tweeted, “We lost a visionary. Tulsi Tanti was the hero of India’s green energy revolution. A business pioneer, an inspiration for our own #green quest and a dear friend.”
