Although any good multi-purpose potting compost is fine for pots, for best results a mix of equal parts of John Innes No 3 compost (Westland, £3.99 for10ltr, waitrosegarden.com) and horticultural grit is the magic formula for the well-drained soil that container plants love. Add slow-release fertiliser tablets such as Osmocote Controlled Release Plant Food Tablets (£3.99 for 25, dewaldens.com) to keep your plants well nourished.
