MON April 22

■ A community group in East Lothian has been gifted £1,000 to establish a regular youth music night. The Walker Group, which is building homes in the area, stepped in with a donation to support the launch of the initiative by the Fraser Centre Community Trust in Tranent. Based in the former Winton Picture House, the trust hosts a range of community events.

FOOD AND DRINK

Tucked beneath St Stephen’s Street in Stockbridg­e, Skua is celebratin­g its first birthday this month. In just one year, the speakeasy bar now finds itself listed in the Michelin and Good Food guides.

TUE April 23

■ Six men have been charged with attempted murder following the assault of two men in Southhouse Square. It is understood that the suspects, aged between 20 and 58, assaulted two men and stole a black BMW during the incident on January 26. One victim, aged 25, was found seriously injured and taken to the Royal Infirmary. A second victim, aged 24, was also injured.

MUSIC

St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh has announced an expansion to its education offering, with two new programmes for young singers interested in developing classical solo voice to the next level.

WED April 24

■ Five Edinburgh-based projects have received grants to support the growth of community-led work for people living with dementia, their carers and families. Awards totalling £75,333 are being shared by groups including Edinburgh Leisure’s Movement for Memories initiative, Queensferr­y Churches Care in the Community project, and Space @ Broomhouse Hub’s Beacon Club.

COMMUNITY

Community groups in the Capital are being offered free use of Edinburgh University spaces for meetings, workshops, events and even rehearsals following a successful pilot scheme.

THU April 25

■ The shortlist for 2024’s Turner Prize includes Scottish artist Jasleen Kaur who covered a red sports car with an ornamental doily mat. Glasgow-born Kaur is one of four artists nominated in the prize’s 40th anniversar­y. The artists are competing for the top prize of £25,000. An exhibition will be held at Tate Britain before the prize announceme­nt on December 3.

DANCE

Edinburgh schoolboy Charlie Waller, a P6 pupil from Blackhall, has been offered a place at one of the world’s leading dance institutio­ns – the Royal Ballet School in London.

FRI CRIME April 26

■ A trio of “seasoned Kiltwalker­s” from Edinburgh are preparing to take on all four of this year’s events in aid of cancer charities. Johnston Carmichael workmates Grant Roger, Mark Stewart and Haydn Burgoyne will walk almost 84 miles by tackling Mighty Stride Kiltwalk events in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee and the Capital – all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and Myeloma UK.

A police investigat­ion is underway after 43 mobile phones were reported stolen at the Terminal V electronic music festival at The Royal Highland Centre earlier this month.
