AGAINST THE GRAIN

The kitchen is part of an open-plan living-dining space on the ground floor of the house that flows out to a terrace (with an outdoor dining area), which is used during the summer months. The oiled walnut units and granite kitchen worktops were already installed in the container house when it was delivered on site. ‘Our architect advised us not to choose a white kitchen, even though it was a popular choice at the time. He was right – there is a definite shift towards more texture and tactility in the home. I was the one who chose the oil finish rather than lacquer for the cabinetry, as it has a more natural look.’
