What is the number one thing to consider? When space is at a premium, it is even more important to make sure the design is tailored to you. We do this by asking questions, playing games, testing current and future scenarios. By understanding our clients, we are able to make sure their home works hard and is flexible and adaptable enough to meet their needs now and in the future.

Can you share some innovative ideas from past projects? Storage is something that comes up a lot. At our Hive House project, we used exposed plywood for the extension, which acted as both the structure and internal storage. For our Cloister Corner project, we designed bespoke joinery that could be wheeled out from beneath the children’s beds to make the most of their small rooms. Open-plan or smart division – what do you think is the best modern use of space? There has been a significant move away from big open-plan rooms towards more compartmented and articulated spaces. Most of our clients are now looking for a sense of open-ness and connection, but with a bit more definition and consideration towards the different functions of rooms in their homes. For architects, this requires a more bespoke and thoughtful response. In what way do you think the space in our homes is going to have to work harder in 2021? The Covid crisis and associated lockdown has highlighted the lack of flexibility and space within many properties, and the disparity between those with and those without outdoor areas. At our recently completed Fruit

Box project, home to a family with two young children, we designed semi-open timber screens within the property to define different zones for work, play or rest. This articulation of spaces has come into its own during lockdown, allowing different activities to occur throughout the house without disruption. nimtim.co.uk
