The look... OFFICE ATTENBOROUGH
TURN TO SAFARI-STYLE TOPS FOR YOUR JOURNEY INTO THE CORPORATE JUNGLE, AKA WORK
Safari style is back, with dusky patch-pocket jackets and shirts – dare we say ‘shackets’ – all over the spring/summer catwalks, inspired by the return of Sir David Attenborough to our screens in
A Life On Our Planet (out 9 April on Netflix). Of course, the only trekking we’re likely to do is across the office to the printer, but that’s OK – the safari-style top, whether a shirt or jacket, is an easy staple for all occasions, cropping up in a range of neutral shades and understated earthy tones, such as dusky taupe, washed khaki and camel. It’s a crisp take on the utilitarian styles of last summer, with, importantly, patch-pockets.
‘It’s a great alternative to the white shirt you might ordinarily invest in,’ says Felicity Kay, ELLE’s fashion editor. ‘It’s easy and not as formal, and you can style it in multiple ways: leave your shirt open and wear it as a casual jacket over a slip dress, or button it up and wear it with relaxed tailored trousers and Stan Smiths.
You’ll definitely get more than one season’s wear out of it.’
If you’re looking to update your utility-inspired styles from last season, accessories are an easy shortcut. Try a wide canvas belt with rectangular buckle. Style your safari-style jacket and shirt with a matching lower-half in the earthy shades too: cargo pants or tailored ones with a crisp knife-pleat, as seen at Max Mara, or with a patch-pocket midi-skirt, as seen on the runway of up-and-comer Rokh. And if you want to go the whole nine yards with safari style, add a touch of animal print, with zebra or tiger-striped accessories. Attenborough would be proud.
