THREE DAYS IN… ROME
LIVE A LONG WEEKEND OF LA DOLCE VITA IN ITALY’S GLAMOROUS CAPITAL CITY
From must-see tourist spots to fine dining and vintage shopping, this is how to spend a decadent long weekend in Italy’s glamorous capital
DAY1
On arrival, make a beeline for Chapter Roma, a stylish, design-led hotel nestled in the heart of Rome’s Jewish Quarter. The vibe is cool and glamorous, with snug loft-style rooms created by of-the-moment South African interior designer Tristan du Plessis. Relax with a negroni in the bar – arguably the best in the city – and admire work by Fendi’s favourite ‘calligraffiti’ artist, Warios.
THE HOT TICKET Roscioli
This restaurant serves up some of the most delicious Italian pasta, wine and cured meats in town. But, be warned, you’ll need to book way in advance to score a table here.
DAY2
Start the day early, exploring the labyrinthine streets of the ancient city on a walking tour that will help you smash your daily step target. Iconic landmarks such as the Vatican City, Colosseum, Trevi Fountain (right) and the Roman Forum are all within striking distance of the hotel. Come lunchtime, refuel at Ba Ghetto for no-nonsense and deliciously hearty dishes (its signature fried mozzarella balls have to be eaten to be believed).
DON’T MISS Bar San Calisto
Known throughout the neighbourhood as the place to enjoy a spritz or two, Bar San Calisto is more retro coffee shop than cocktail lounge, and has long been one of the local bohemian crowd’s most popular hangouts.
DAY3
Skip the crowds around Via Condotti’s designer boutiques and head to Via del Governo Vecchio, to find vintage steals at shops such as Vestiti Usati Cinzia, a fabulous fashion time capsule for treasures from the 195Os to 198Os. For one-of-a-kind handbags and eclectic scarves, pop into Maison Halaby, and pick up whimsical homewares at Lelli. Finally, cross the river and explore the cutesy shops and plant-strewn squares in the Trastevere district.
THE PARTING SHOT Settimo
Say ‘arrivederci Roma’ at ritzy rooftop bar Settimo – its panoramic views and garden-themed décor make it a strong contender for Italy’s best sundowner spot.
