Loveless is A good film. But, unless you enjoy extended scenes of a hateful divorcing couple screaming at each other, their hatred only exacerbated by the abduction of their cherub-faced child, it’s a difficult one to recommend you rush out to see. At times, the commitment to be as bleak as possible is almost comic, feeling like an upscale version of some teenage edge-lord’s diary, but the acting is superb, the panoramic view of a society in crisis has real scope, and the excellent photography turns modern moscow into a dystopia Rick deckard would feel at home in. Just don’t see it on a date, or after a long week at work, or if you want to spend the rest of your day with a scintilla of joy in your heart.
