The Snyder Cut lives!

After a long and intense fan campaign, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is getting a director’s cut. How do we feel?

- HELEN O’HARA Editor-at-large AMON WARMANN Contributor

Helen: I have always said that I was excited to see the Snyder Cut. At the very least, it should be more coherent than the film we saw in cinemas.

Amon: I’m definitely curious to see how this turns out. It’ll have no choice but to be better, because it’s the singular vision of one director all the way through. The main issue with Justice League is that it was very clearly two different films pieced together. [Snyder’s and the final cut, finished by Joss Whedon.] Helen: We know about some of the differences between the versions. We can say, for example, that Ray Fisher’s Cyborg was going to be a much more central character. We know that Darkseid was going to be more of a presence. And we also know that it was going to build to a second part. There is a possibility that if people like this, the campaign starts all over again for a second Snyder-directed Justice League film.

Amon: That would be interesting because, obviously, Ben Affleck at this point has said that he’s done with Batman and we have a new

Batman. But we’re forgetting to ask the most important question here, which is: will Henry Cavill have his moustache? Helen: [Laughs] Well, that came from the reshoots, right? So presumably, that shouldn’t be an issue. The lip CGI should be gone.

Amon: But not forgotten. There are some wondering if this release validates people we shouldn’t be validating. I think there’s some truth to that. But I’m choosing to believe there are more Snyder fans who didn’t harass people than people who did.

Helen: This fandom did raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for suicide prevention charities, which is to their credit. And they succeeded in persuading a major media company to spend tens of millions of dollars on a film that has already lost them tens of millions of dollars. There is also a darker side to their fandom. I hope the right people are encouraged by this and not the wrong ones.

Amon: I’m just happiest for Snyder because what took him away from finishing the film in the first place was a family tragedy. The fact that Warner Bros. has given him the money to finish his vision, I respect that. I just hope that he’s satisfied with it. And I’m curious to see it.
