5 THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU

- BETH WEBB

THE SHAKESPEARE-INSPIRED HIGH-SCHOOL CLASSIC BRINGS US MUCH CHEER 1 THE FRANKIE VALLI MUSICAL NUMBER

Grand gestures don’t get more romantic than Heath Ledger’s Patrick, complete with a toothy grin and a brass band, singing a pitch-perfect rendition of ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ from the soccer-field stands. Even Julia Stiles’ stubbornly single Kat didn’t stand a chance against this unbeatable blend of charisma and corniness.

2 BABY JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT

As the puppy-dog-eyed new student Cameron, Gordon-levitt proved that even at the start of his career he could perfect the role of a hopelessly nice guy, winning the heart of Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) over oily model Joey (Andrew Keegan), which is understandable: nobody can resist such sweet charms and wholesome chivalry.

3 MS PERKY

Grown-up stars in teen movies often seem to have the most fun, as is proven by Allison Janney’s sweary student counsellor/erotic novelist, who has a fondness for huge bratwursts. Janney only appears fleetingly in the film, which is just as well as her joyfully frank, straight-talking sexpot steals every scene she’s in.

4 THE PROM

The school-dance climax checks off just about every glorious teen-movie-prom box. It doesn’t end well for everyone (Kat trusted you, Patrick!), but from the performance of the punk band (portrayed by real-life rock group Letters To Cleo!) to the bad guy’s comeuppance (Bianca kicking Joey in the crotch!) to Bianca and Cameron’s big kiss, there’s plenty of grin-inducing fun to cut through the drama.

5 THE POEM

An absolute tearjerker of a scene (and the meaning behind the film’s title), this is the moment when Stiles’ jilted heroine finally shows her feelings via a sweet, not-so-subtle confession to Ledger’s Patrick. If we’re splitting hairs the list is actually longer than ten, but the sentiment will melt your heart nonetheless.
