Raiders Of The Lost Ark

- Chosen by DAVID SCHWIMMER

DAVID SCHWIMMER: “This scene with Harrison Ford in Raiders Of The Lost Ark, which is one of the greatest action-adventure movies and one of the greatest characters that he ever played. It’s the moment when he’s fought his way through this whole army of people. He’s dirty, sweaty, exhausted. And he runs into this huge guy who takes out his sword and does this whole thing as a warm-up. And Harrison Ford just takes out his gun and shoots him. It’s one of those moments where you felt so connected to the character. I don’t know if it was scripted, or if he did it because he was so exhausted, but it was a perfect, perfect thing to do in that moment.”

EXT. BAZAAR — DAY

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is searching frantically for Marion (Karen Allen), from whom he has become separated during a melee in an Egyptian bazaar.

He runs through a small square. Can’t see anything. He climbs onto a cart for a better view.

INDY: Marion!

Seeing nothing, he runs back into the square…

And suddenly, the crowd of people milling around part like the Red Sea, revealing…

A giant of a man (Terry Richardson), standing several feet away from Indy. He is dressed almost entirely in black, save for a giant red belt. He is holding a sword.

He laughs, sinisterly. He raises his sword. Indy wipes his brow with his left arm.

The swordsman begins to show off his skills, passing his sword back and forth from one hand to the next at dizzying speed. He twirls it in one hand and then two.

Indy, wearied, sighs at this display. Nonchalantly, he takes his gun out of its holster and shoots the swordsman. By the time the swordsman has fallen to the ground, as the watching crowd cheers, Indy has already turned away, holstered his gun, and is focused on looking for Marion.
