THE TONY SOPRANO FILM CLUB

WHEN HE WASN’T BRANDISHING A BERETTA 85, HE WAS OFTEN WIELDING A REMOTE CONTROL

- NICK DE SEMLYEN

THE FUGITIVE

1993

In Season 4, Tony acquires a new widescreen TV. He takes it for a testdrive with the Harrison Ford thriller, presumably wondering why an actor in it looks just like Ralph Cifaretto.

THE DEPARTED

2006 Scorsese famously hasn’t seen The Sopranos, but Tony does dig Marty’s crime epic, enough to enjoy the soundtrack while on a fateful drive in Season 6.

MEN IN BLACK

1997 Discussing Laserdiscs with Paulie Walnuts, Tony says he enjoys watching the galaxy-defenders with a bowl of Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn.

THE BANK DICK

1940 Rotund ’40s actor W.C. Fields is regularly referenced and impersonated by Tony, who’s a big fan of this bank-robbery farce.

THE PRINCE OF TIDES

1991 Tony not only watches the Barbra Streisand weepie, but sends Melfi a flower basket with Tide detergent and a card reading, “Prince of Tide”. Hot joke!

SEVEN

1995

“Halfway through it I’m thinking, ‘This is bullshit, it’s a waste of my fuckin’ time, why do I give a fuck who the killer is?’” Tony laments. More of a Fight Club guy?

RIO BRAVO

1959

Further proof that Tony is a big Westerns fan (see also his passion for Gary Cooper: “The strong silent type. That was an American...”).

THE BIRDS

1963

Tony has a nightmare about a seagull stealing his penis, then blames it on a viewing of this film. Talk about putting the ‘cock’ in Hitchcock.

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

1991

“You’d think I was Hannibal Lecture,” Tony moans to Carmela in the pilot. Well, he does enjoy a nice Chianti with his braciole.

THE GODFATHER PART II

1974

It would be a shock if this wasn’t in his DVD collection. He prefers it to the original, explains Carmela, because “he likes the part where Vito goes back to Sicily”.
