From cypress and jasmine to apple and tomato, this year’s natural scents will grow on you

-

1. Green mandarin

Gentlemen Only by Givenchy This fragrance has woody cedar and earthy vetiver at its heart, but top notes include pink peppercorn, birch leaf and green mandarin, and is at its best on warmer days. £63/100ml; johnlewis.com

2. Green apple

Eros by Versace Versace’s attempt at matching a scent to the Greek god of love has resulted in something rich and sweet — due to tonka and Madagascan vanilla — but it’s sharpened up for summer wearing by lemon, mint and green apple. £70/100ml; johnlewis.com

3. Green violet

Momentum by Bentley The lighter of two new fragrances from Bentley, Momentum is fresh and bright because of its green violet, bergamot and aquatic accord, but is backed up with an engine of tonka bean, sandalwood and musk. £60/100ml; bentley-fragrances.com

4. Green tomato accord

Uomo Acqua by Valentino Reminiscent of an Italian garden, apparently, this new variation on Uomo is almost edible with ingredients of mandarin, citron and, most crucially, green tomato. Leather, neroli and vetiver notes give it greater balance. £77/100ml; selfridges.com

5. Shiso leaf

Sole di Positano by Tom Ford Directly translated as “Positano sun”, Ford’s new unisex fragrance is bold and floral, but dries down into almost a summer super-cologne, thanks to the sandalwood, jasmine and shiso leaf, which is fresh and peppery. £155/50ml; tomford.com

6. Green bergamot

Luna Rossa Carbon by Prada New to the expanding Luna Rossa range, Carbon is a rich Fougère (classic masculine scent), but in addition to the recognisable patchouli, there is amber in the form of ambroxan, and sweet spice top notes of green bergamot and pepper. £83/150ml; prada.com

7. Italian cypress

Velvet Cypress by Dolce & Gabbana The latest fragrance from D&G’s Velvet collection is arranged around Italian cypress, which is woody and aromatic, but the inclusion of clary sage, bergamot and lemon brightens it up. £300/150ml; harrods.com
