An aesthetic winningly known as the “panda”-type — a high-contrast black-and-white design inspired by Sixties motor sports and intended to provide enhanced visibility — guides the look of Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas watch. “The Overseas Chronograph is a state-of-the-art outdoor watch dedicated to the most demanding watch connoisseurs seeking technical excellence combined with a robust and travel-proof design,” says the brand’s chief marketing officer, Laurent Perves. “This watch is the ultimate expression of elite travel and exploration. Its latest iteration introduces a deep black-lacquered dial contrasting with silver chronograph counters, offering highly legible indications as well as an assertive style.”

That style extends to the watch’s distinctive six-sided bezel, the patented interchangeable straps — which offer the choice of a metal bracelet composed of links forming half Maltese crosses, or straps in either alligator leather or rubber — and the self-winding Caliber 5200, with a 22k gold oscillating weight which can be viewed through the watch’s transparent sapphire crystal case back.

Though coming up to being 263 years old in September, the luxury Swiss house has embraced modernity with its lovingly-curated Instagram account, The Hour Lounge, which also functions as a discussion forum. Says Perves, “This is a unique way to discover past models, unknown or legendary stories, as well as collectors’ perspective and anecdotes.”

This year is so far proving a busy one for the brand. “As per its tradition, the maison found inspiration in its heritage,” Perves says. “With the launch of the new Historiques 1942, 1948 and American 1921, while at the same time striving in the quest for innovation with the new automatic Tourbillon calibre in the Traditionnelle collection. As well as having a spirit for travel and exploration, be that historical, as with the Métiers d’Arts Les Aérostiers, or more contemporary, with the Overseas Dual Time pieces. By constantly reinventing itself, while taking inspiration from its deepest roots and core values, Vacheron Constantin perpetuates its unique savoir-faire.”
