GETING THERE:
British Airways (www. ba.com) will begin a twice-weekly (Thursday and Sunday) service from Heathrow to Charleston on April 4. Fares from £444 return, eight-hour travelling time.
GETTING AROUND:
By land and water taxis, pedicabs, and a number of bus and carriage tours, including those run by Old South Carriage Company (www.oldsouthcarriage.com), as well as such specialised ones as Gullah Tours Inc, which is led by a native Charlestonian with a slave heritage (www. gullahtours.com).
STAYING ON:
There’s a wealth of historic hotels, charming inns and quaint bed and breakfasts. The landmark Belmond Charleston Place (www.belmond.com/charlestonplace), which is near the numerous shops on King Street and the Charleston City Market, offers free transport around the city and is home to the Forbes Four Star Charleston Grill. The newest luxury hotel in town, which the author will soon be sampling, is King Street’s grand Hotel Bennett (www. HotelBennett.com).
