Pochettino eyes deals but rules out defenders

- Dan Kilpatrick

MAURICIO POCHETTINO today insisted Tottenham have not finished their summer spending but ruled out signing a defender.

Spurs have already bought Victor Wanyama from Southampton and Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar for a combined £27million but the manager expects more new faces before the transfer deadline.

“I expect some signings in the next few weeks. We’ll see what happens. We expect some activity, yes,” said Pochettino ahead of tomorrow’s friendly against Atletico Madrid.

Spurs have agreed an £11m deal for Marseille winger Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, who has completed a medical and agreed personal terms. The French club are waiting for Clinton Njie — Spurs’ 22-year-old Cameroon international, signed from Lyon last summer — to move the other way in a separate deal before releasing Nkoudou. Njie has also undergone a medical and both deals should be announced in the coming days.

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mattias Ginter has also been linked but Pochettino said he is happy with his defensive options.

The Argentine is without the injured Jan Vertonghen, while Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier are among the 10 senior players left in London following Euro 2016.

Pochettino refused to reveal which positions he wanted to strengthen but said he was not looking to add a defender, adding that Vertonghen should be fit for the Premier League opener at Everton on August 13.

“Jan Vertonghen is training very well now and is very close to coming back,” he said. “We have Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer while Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama can also play centre-back. We have enough players in that position.”
