Spellbinding show increases the tempo

WE’RE getting to the business end of this first series of the adaptation of Deborah Harkness’s All Souls Trilogy, and things have turned rather dark.

What began as a romance between the friendly vampire Matthew (Matthew Goode) and reluctant witch/historian Dr Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) has turned into a supernatural battle. Diana is in captivity, being tortured by Satu (Malin Buska), who wants to know her secrets, and has some persuasive ways of finding them out. “Witches murdered my parents and then they covered it up,” says Diana, still defiant.

Gerbert D’Aurillac (Trevor Eve) paces around looking menacing, until finally Matthew charters a helicopter and thinks about rescuing Diana.
