Vettel looked to have the race sewn up but his attempts to get past Bottas after a safety car cost him a podium finish.

Vettel knew he was under pressure to make a good start but he forced the issue and collided with Bottas.

Once again, Vettel looked to be cruising to victory only for the heavens to open with 25 laps remaining. But he made a mistake at the Sachs Kurve hairpin and bowed out.

A team error in qualifying had already put Vettel in a trickier position off the grid and, as he tried to force a way through, there was a coming together with Hamilton. Vettel was the one to come off second best and could finish only fourth to Hamilton’s win.
