Gunners must keep Ramsey — he can be their captain one day, insists Wilshere

- James Olley

JACK WILSHERE has urged former club Arsenal to keep hold of Aaron Ramsey and backed him as a future Gunners captain.

Ramsey is out of contract at the end of the season and there are currently no talks taking place to extend his deal, meaning he is free to agree a move to an overseas club from the start of next year.

Standard Sport revealed last week that Liverpool and Manchester United were also weighing up a move for Ramsey, 27, in January but Wilshere — who left Arsenal for West Ham last summer — believes the Gunners are making a huge mistake if they allow Ramsey to leave.

He said: “He’s [Ramsey] grown up to be a great player with Arsenal. They could do with someone like him. We know what he can do. For me he’s a future Arsenal captain. I know he loves the club. It’s difficult for me to comment on because I’m not there but I do know he’s a great player — if it was me I know I would want to keep him around.”

Wilshere also believes s

Ramsey (right) would have no problem establishing ng himself at another elite e club.

He told the Islington Gazette: “You’ve got to look at the situation and ask, ‘How many top teams in the Premier League and elsewhere could he e get in?’ And you’d havee to say them all.”

Meanwhile, Unai Emery today insisted a lack of help from the Premier League for English teams in Europe is the price they pay for lavish television income. Broadcasters have paid a total of £5.13billion for the rights to show various elements of the 2018-19 season, with Sky Sports choosing to switch Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Leicester to Monday night, three days beforbefore facing Sporting LisLisbon in Portugal. Emery won the Europa League on three successive occasionso between 22014-16 with Sevilla anda Spanish clubs haveha often benefited from La Liga assistance in rearrangingrea matches. “We are first in one competition [the Premier League] and the TV is very important,” he told Standard Sport. “If they [TV] decided we are going to play Monday, we don’t stop to think if it is better or not.”
